Mosin Nagant M44 Sporter Page 9
The next thing was to do was to get the safety lever functioning properly. Since the original SKS trigger guard setup, required a flat spring, it wouldn't work in the mosin trigger guard. This was due to the location of the trigger itself. Therefore, I had to come up with another idea. I decided to weld a nut to the area of the old spring location. Then I used a a pin shaped like an upside down "T". I then placed a spring on the "T" and put it up through the nut. The "T" is retained by another pin, at the top of the nut, but through the stem of the "T". The pictures came out just ok. I will try to take a new set and post them. I have since designed the safety a little differently. The design will still use an SKS type safety lever, but will also engage/disengage the sear as well blocking the trigger. It also has a provision for reducing "slop" for the trigger as well. This particular M44 didn't/doesn't have any trigger "slop." The safety will also be able to be mounted by soldering or welding it to the mosin trigger guard. This is the 1st prototype, to see if it could be done. I'm not very fond of the M44's bolt turning safety feature. Esepecially in use as a sporter, hunting in a thick brush type atmosphere. Hopefully I will be able to build it in the summer 03.
