The original sling slot was fitted with a glued in, fitted piece of pine, running the entire width. Then wood putty was applied. We're going to pick out the wood putty and replace it with fiber glass. As you can see in the photos, the pad doesn't exactly fit. I'm sure that since the butt stock is slightly cupped and split on bottom, it wouldn't fit better. We didn't want to grind on the pad and take a chance on screwing it up. Since I'm a mechanic and fabricator, not a carpenter, I decided to alter the stock with fiberglass. I repaired the crack, by opening it up with the "whiz wheel", applying Tiger Hair fiber glass and clamping with a welder's visegrip.
This picture shows the under side of the wrist area of the stock. The stock was drilled, at an angle almost to the tang, with a 3/8" drill bit. The hole begins about a half inch from the sling slot. Then the hole was stuffed with fiber glass and another length of 1/4" aluminum rod was inserted. Then when it set, the hole was patched with fiber glass.
