Mosin Nagant M44 Sporter Page 8
Now that I decided to graft in an SKS trigger guard to take advantage of it's safety, a few things were required. I first had to make a jig for the original trigger guard. This was so that the trigger guard would fit back onto the mosin receiver, given that it doesn't not have a completely flat mounting area. The jig was built from scrap metal I had laying around in my garage. I used a piece of 2x4 box tube and some flat stock. Holes were drilled and the trigger guard was fastened to the jig. I just had to make sure I had sufficient room, to get my mig welders nozzle into any tight areas. Then after taking a few measurements, the SKS trigger guard was trimmed some.
Next I had to decide where to cut the mosin trigger guard. I wanted to keep the basic shape and rear mounting pointing of the original. So I cut out the area, shown in the next picture.
Then I messured the area I cut out and cut out those same measurements from the SKS trigger guard. After a little fitting, I tack welded in the portion of the SKS trigger guard to the mosin trigger guard.
Now there is a gap between the two guards, so I filled it in with a combination of scrap metal cut offs and weld. This way it will appear as one piece. I also had to reweld a few areas after grinding inbetween, so the "new" mosin trigger guard appeared "factory." Then the surfaces were grinded and polished smooth. Then the whole assembly was mounted back on the receiver, to make sure it fit properly. It fit perfectly, thanks to the jig I made, prior.
